Zohran Mamdani Vows a 'New Era' for The Big Apple in Inaugural Address
On his initial day in office, Zohran Mamdani committed to “transform” America's largest city, declaring “a new era” and an ambitious start to his term.
An Unprecedented Mayor
The young figure, who was a relatively obscure state assemblyman, now stands as the city's first Muslim mayor. He additionally marked a milestone by being the first to be sworn in using the Islamic holy text.
“A moment like this comes rarely and rarer still is it that the citizens whose hands are upon the controls for transformation,” Mamdani added.
Rejecting suggestions to temper hopes, the mayor declared: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to reset is that of small expectations. Beginning today we will lead boldly and broadly.”
Steering by Democratic Socialist Ideals
Mamdani did not shy away from his socialist politics. “I was elected as a democratic socialist and I will govern as one. I will not compromise my ideals for fear of being called radical,” he proclaimed to rapturous applause.
The inauguration was a dual event, beginning with a late-night oath-taking in a old subway station. He was officially inaugurated on the steps of city hall by Vermont independent senator Bernie Sanders, who spoke of Mamdani's ascent as a victory over political establishments.
An Ambitious Platform
Mamdani now faces one of the most unrelenting jobs in American politics, with a plan including:

- Fare-free public buses
- A rent freeze for approximately 1 million households
- A pilot of municipally-operated grocery stores
The estimated $10 billion cost of these initiatives may prove difficult to fund. Mamdani has vowed to tax more heavily the city's top earners and corporations. However, as a municipality subject to the state government, he will require the backing of Governor Kathy Hochul.

The outgoing mayor offered a unusual piece of advice about a supposed resident spirit in the home, which allegedly only haunts those who do not act to “do right by the city.”
Mamdani ended his speech with a simple declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
