"Do you know when you'll be chatting with the band?" a text pops up. "I was hoping to ask if I can become their newest bandmate."

There is only a key snag: The author likewise longs to be Haim's newest recruit. And we're in plentiful company. Multiple celebrated supporters have openly coveted the role.

One thing is obvious something is going on. The siblings Este, Danielle and Alana launched their career playing gigs at local delicatessens with their parents. Today, they are multiple Grammy contenders.

In the tradition of the best ensembles, they're a tight-knit unit. Their videos frequently show them marching in unison down the streets of Los Angeles. In concert, they jam with such unfettered exuberance you can't help but think, "I wish to be a piece of that, too."

"The numerous instances on tour that fans came up to us and said, 'Seeing you perform, I got a bass'," states Alana, the youngest of the trio. "That is the greatest honour. It is a prize in itself. We've done our job if we can encourage young girls to make music."

"Therefore all is invited to be the honorary part of the family."

Award Nod

The group are speaking from a break, where they're recovering after an lengthy tour in support of their latest album, I Quit.

They're right now celebrating the news it's been nominated for a top rock honor at the Grammys – with Haim the pioneering all-female band ever in contention for the award.

"I follow the nominations every year, so it sort of feels like an out-of-body experience when your name is read out," says Alana. "I immediately called my sisters to say, 'Am I hearing this right or am I imagining things'?"

The weight of the accolade resonates with the trio.

"We really set out to make a rock record this time, so it's a significant step," adds Alana. "Yet we're just thankful for the pioneers that inspired us."

Personal Turmoil and Humour

The record emerged from a period of personal change. All three sisters found themselves single, and the music captures that odd liminal space where you're relieved to be free, but not quite ready to let go.

The words track departures and partings. The sisters want love, but not the specific love they've experienced. You can hear them figuring out in real time who they aspire to be.

"That's a perfect description, yes," agrees Danielle. "I Quit is kind of like a personal statement. You have to consciously practice blocking the criticism and saying, 'I don't give what people think'."

Refinement of Music

That recent resilience demanded a new sound – more unpolished and powerful than anything the band had done before.

For Danielle, who helped produce the album, that began with the drum sound.

"Percussion is such a nuanced thing, and I am so passionate about it," she emphasizes.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the name of our book," jokes Alana. "I always say, our albums cannot begin until we find the perfect drum sound."

Stories and Shared Camaraderie

The trio's candor inspired the album's promotional campaign, where the sisters shared some of their personal tales.

Someone left Este over a health consideration. Alana told a story of travelling to spend New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a high five at midnight.

"Experiencing these heartbreaks, you just feel like there's no hope," says Alana. "Therefore to be able to find humor in those stories and have them tell you even crazier stories, it's incredible."

A Secure Future

It's not difficult sense a shift in the band. Today, Haim are more assured of their standing in the industry.

They're top-billed acts, with hit albums and an international fan base.

Yet the band will consistently be their number one focus.

"My sisters and I have been performing since I was little," shares Alana. "It's like nothing else that we were meant to do. And I'm really thankful we've gotten here and we're still kicking."
